25/11/2008 - Press statement
regarding a special Christmas gig by Phil Bates and Tina McBain -
"POSSIBLY THE PERFECT GIFT FOR CHRISTMAS – CONCERT IN THE
CRYPT
On Sunday 28th December, after Evensong, down in the Crypt at St. Editha's
Church, a most delightful concert will be taking place. Two of Tamworth's most
prominent musicians, Phil Bates of The Orchestra (formerly ELOll) and Tina
McBain will be performing their annual Twixtmas concert.
Tina explained `We are doing this concert for all sorts of reasons; firstly, the
period between Christmas and New Year is often a little flat and many families
are together at this time and look for something nice to do. So Three years ago
Phil and I decided to do these concerts, which have proved to be very popular.
Secondly, we do have a Christmas show at Middleton Hall on 6th December, and
this year Phil has been so busy with his former ELO and ELOll (now called The
Orchestra) colleagues, touring all over the world. He has been none stop with
sell out concerts all over the world with two hugely successful UK tours this
year in large theatres. So The Orchestra fans were well aware of the Middleton
Hall show some time ago, thus it is now completely sold out via the internet to
fans from all over the country. Which was pleasing for us, but left us with
predicament; we did not want to let down the many people in our local area who
have supported us for years. So we thought we needed to do something for those
who constantly support us and this is perfect.
Finally of course, it's our way of continuing to raise a bit more towards the
Roof appeal for St. Editha's church which needs to raise £250,000 for a new
roof. Its a magnificent building, but needs constant upkeep.
Both Phil and Tina, who have played magnificent venues all over the country, and
in fact in Phil's case all over the world, are both really excited about the
crypt show as it will be so atmospheric. The material they will be presenting
will be mainly gentle acoustic music, Blues, Beatles, ballads and of course a
smattering of ELO and festive material.
The doors will open at 7.30pm, concert starting at 8.00pm. Tickets are on sale
now at the bookshop in St. Editha's Church and can also be obtained from
www.phil-bates.co.uk under special events. So if you are looking for
something different as a gift for your loved ones for Christmas, then maybe this
could be the perfect solution."

Whitehaven News -
"Christmas arrives early but
Wizzard disappears in a flash
By Margaret Crosby and Andrew
Clarke
MORE than 250 people
turned up at Blackberry Way (the Civic), saw My Baby Jive (the
mayor!) and as things hotted up on the dance floor, the
Firebrigade was only sang about, and not summoned. It sure was a
Wizzard night!
Roy Wood and his band took us on a journey through his
significant repertoire ending on that 1973 festive classic, I
Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day. It didn’t matter that the
Civic Hall deccies hadn’t yet been put up, there were plenty of
balloons, a good buffet and lots of sparkly sequinned frocks.
The atmosphere was ‘party’ and Roy and his band quickly had the
place jumpin’.
Thanks to Whitehaven Chamber of Trade, and chief organiser
Charles Maudling, a popular music icon had once again been
brought to town to switch on the Christmas lights and headline
at an evening gig. People left the Civic event in festive mood,
already looking forward to the prospect of who we might get for
next year’s extravaganza.
Charles said: “Roy’s a great character, very charismatic. And
he gave a great performance.
“It was a pity he wasn’t on stage a bit longer for the
switch-on, but he had travelled a long way and was running a bit
late, having been caught in the traffic hold-ups at Howgate. He
told me he had really enjoyed playing Whitehaven. He thought it
was great.’’
The Brummy-born master of The Move, this year given an
honorary doctorate of music by the University of Derby, had left
his trademark wild make-up and colourful costume at home but
still sported his long mad hair (tinged red) and tinted specs.
It was at around 6.20pm the Glam Rock legend had joined mayor
and mayoress of Copeland, Keith and Freda Hitchen, to press the
button and light up the streets of Whitehaven at the town’s big
Christmas switch-on.
Wizzard star Wood did the honours in front of a packed
Lowther Street crowd of almost 5,000 on Sunday and fair to say
his brief appearance was all too short for those who had
gathered to enjoy the festive atmosphere and give him a rousing
greeting. In fact he was on stage for less than 30 seconds.
“I hope everyone’s kettles don’t go off when I flick this
switch!” he joked, and greeted the crowds who had waited to join
in the count down before he and his band headed for the Civic
Hall.
But there was plenty to keep the afternoon crowd entertained
in the build-up to Wood’s cameo appearance. Lowther Street and
King Street were full of stalls and fairground attractions, with
many shops opening especially for the occasion (first Sunday
opening in the run up to Christmas) and the cafes and pubs
enjoyed a good trade.
On the busy CFM stage, DJs Andy Wood and Pete Moss hosted an
afternoon of fun, games and competitions, while local dance
troupes including Cheerleader Stars, Stagestars and Popsteps
performed with talent and charm to a host of festive favourites.
And two of Whitehaven’s finest musicians, Steph Wars and Andy
Winters, treated the crowd to an acoustic set, taken from the
charity CD Now That’s What I Call Whitehaven.
Mr Maudling added: “I am thrilled this year’s switch on event
went so well, attracting so many people. The weather helped by
staying dry.
“The build-up to the switch-on included great entertainment
with the CFM roadshow keeping the crowds going all day. Street
theatre by the Bread and Butter Co was hilarious and there was
local entertainment from Cheryl Andrews’ Popsteps and
Cheerleader Stars, Charlotte McGarry’s Stagestars, Whitehaven
Theatre Group’s Beauty and the Beast cast (their forthcoming
panto).’’
Taylor’s Funfair was in full swing all day and cafes and pubs
reported excellent business.
Some retail stores even recorded increases on last year’s
takings.
Rugby stars from Whitehaven were also out and about,
auctioning off a Haven shirt, signed by rock band Status Quo
when they played at The Recre in August. It raised £60 for
charity."

'ELO Frontman Jeff Lynne Receives Million-Air Certificates'
Songwriter and Electric Light Orchestra frontman
Jeff Lynne was awarded Million-Air
certificates for “Turn To Stone, “ which has earned over one million airplays,
and “Don’t Bring Me Down,” for having over two million airplays. BMI’s Linda
Livingston and Phil Graham presented Lynne the certificates at a recent visit to
his studio in Los Angeles.
BMI recognizes
the songwriters, composers and music publishers of its million and multi-million
performance status songs with “Million-Air” performance certificates.
Over 3900 songs
have been awarded Million-Air certificates, which range from one million
performances to over 12 million performances. To be included in this exclusive
roster, a song with an average length of three minutes must have been broadcast
over one million times. This definition equals at least 50,000 broadcast hours,
which equals more than 5.7 years of continuous airplay.

Shown are (l

06/07/2008 - On June 3rd 2008,
Melodic Rock
Online reported in its news section that the much under-rated British rock
group Atlantic (which featured The Orchestra's Phil Bates), have their cd 'Power'
reissued on August 22nd.
"Escape Music are delighted to announce the reissue of the CD Power by
Atlantic. First released back in 1994 on the Music For Nations label.
British band Atlantic raised many eyebrows with their one-off release
which can be ranked alongside bands such as Dare, FM, Heartland and
Shy (Tony Mills guests on the album also!).
Atlantic band members include Simon Harrison on guitar and keyboards and the
great Phil Bates (Trickster) on Lead Vocals, guitars and keyboards. The album
had so much potential at the time it is a shame that it has not received the
recognition it richly deserves, so here it is in its full glory and a bonus
track that was not on the original, plus the album will be re-mastered.
Atlantic is: Simon Harrison: guitar and keyboards; Phil Bates:
Lead Vocals, guitars and keyboards; Paul Hoare: Bass; Andy Duncan:
Drums; Chris Taylor: Keyboards; Glenn Williams: Keyboards; Andy
Van Evans: Guitars; Phil Ridden: Drums.
Backing Vocals: Tony Mills, David Saylor, Pete Green, Jo Bates, Phil Bates.
Track list: It's Only Love / Power Over Me / When The War Is Over / Bad Blood /
Can't Hold On / Hands Of Fate / Every Beat Of My Heart / Dangerous Games /
Nothing To Lose / Hard To Believe + Bonus Hearts On Fire.
Release date: August 22.
